The Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA), on the 27th of February 2024, unveiled gender pay gap data for nearly 5,000 Australian private sector employers, marking a vital step towards transparency in addressing workplace gender disparities.
Findings reveal that 62% of median employer gender pay gaps are over 5% and in favour of men.
The rest (8%) are less than -5% and in favour of women.
Mary Wooldridge, CEO of WGEA, emphasises the need for all employers to aim for a gender pay gap within the narrow range of +/-5%.
Significant variations across industries were observed, from a 31.8% gap in the Construction Industry to a 1.9% gap in Accommodation and Food Services.
The publication serves as a call to action for employers to prioritise gender equality, fostering accountability and inclusivity in Australian workplaces.
